I'll agree with your jovial friend Joe, in the sense that I am feeling conflicted in response to this one--in a way unlike the others you have posted thus far. Is it the death in the face/implied dismemberment of the head in contrast to the malleable, corpulent body that provokes conflicting emotion within me? It appears that death is overtaking the body or perhaps it is the other way around? And yet the crimson hued horizon and the crimson halo suggests there is a power at work here--but what? I was reading today about how powerful art may provoke questions in the viewer. Perhaps that is what I am viewing here.
Allie J. has touched on the conflict that resides in all mans souls. The conflict between life and death. Sometimes experiences that say "life" are actually death, and likewise "death" is actually life. The crimson is the power at work along with the blush tone in the face. I suggest finding some music to listen to while viewing any art piece, it helps block out a lot of mind noise.
One of the most evocative pieces of music for me over the past year, is Peter Gabriel's "I Grieve". It is the first piece of music that comes to mind, per your suggestion. I will find time to view this while listening to that piece and see . . .
I tend to look a lot like this after too many burritos.
